MXZ304 Mountain Bike Shoe
As a dedicated winter rider who pedals up frozen streams and across snowy singletrack, you know how important it is to have warm footwear that protects your feet from the elements. Lake was one of the first companies to make a dedicated winter cycling boot, and the new MXZ304 is their best one yet. A larger BOA dial is moved to the front of the tongue, making it easier to use with winter gloves and providing a more even tension across the top of your foot. Otherwise the construction remains similar the previous model, consisting of highly weather-resistant Pittards leather that molds to the shape of your foot for optimal comfort, and a heavy-duty Vibram outsole that provides maximum traction both on and off the bike. Plus, they're filled with lightweight Thinsulate insulation, keeping your toes warm when you're out in the snowy woods for hours at a time.

Winter riding - Boston - 27 degrees coldest temp Absolutely beautiful boot. Craftsmanship flawless. Wonderful winter patina developed after snow, road salt and many muck rides. Worked like a dream on Shimano XTR pedals. However, for a high-top boot, having 1 BOA is -- less than ideal++. The BOA is on the top shin cuff, which tightens down like a glove, but leaves the top of foot loose as a goose. So simple, yes? The boot needs 2 BOAs, 1 to tighten top of foot and 2 to secure the top of shin. Trying to pull the 'wire sharp' BOA laces by hand over the lower foot , build up all the slack, and then ratchet down everything from the top was -- meh, half-azzed at best. This made for the process of putting the boot on and off like that of a ski boot. A frustrating freakin process, especially when sitting outside in very cold temps coming from vehicle and gearing up for a ride. Did they keep my feet warm? Mostly, yes. I can't judge this with confidence as I have a foot that always returns near frostbite no matter. Lastly, although that 1 BOA on the shin cuff tightens down, during the ride it always seemed to open up -- upon home, I was amazed at how much sand and shat from the road made its way into the boot. WTH? Would I toss them? No! Would I recommend them? With caveats as shared.
