I was in the market for an all-purpose (hike/backpack, ski, and leisure) down (650+) coat that could be paired with a shell and a minimal base layer and decided to return this coat because the fit runs large (baggy in the belly area), has an unsightly sheen, didn't feel warm, and lacks a syncher for the back of the hood. I did a good amount of research and narrowed my options to the Ghost Whisperer 2 (GW2) and the Arc'teryx Cerium LT Hooded Down Jacket. Ultimately, I returned the GW2 and kept the Cerium LT because it felt warmer, had a better fit, looked nicer, and has a hood syncher. Fit: I currently have an average build (winter laziness) but still found there to be extra room (inches) in the stomach area. I'd liken their fit to Patagonia's newer products, which seem to be measured for average to slightly meatier consumers (no shame, just order a size down). Look/Sound: I ordered the blue and green coats and found the green to be a bit too bright for my taste (I anticipated more of a muted evergreen) but the blue looked nice. However, the sheen makes the coats look plastic-y and cheap (something closer to a knock-off that cuts corners). It also generates a not insignificant amount of "crinkly" sound with motion. Warmth: I only wore this jacket indoors (so this is highly subjective) but I was not convinced that this coat would keep me warm in the 0F-25F range. It felt incredibly light and the narrow horizontal stitching doesn't provide enough loft to deliver warmth. While this coat might be adequate for backpacking (the act of moving with a heavy backpack), I wasn't convinced that I would've stayed warm after I dropped my pack and made a meal. Functionality: The lack of a tightening cord on the hood is truly confounding and was ultimately a dealbreaker (if the other criticisms above weren't enough). At this price point, I don't know how you could credibly build a coat without this baseline feature. Why have a hood if you can't synch it to the contours of your face? If anything, it'd probably make you colder because it'd capture the cold wind for your ears, neck, and cheeks. The syncher cords on the neck didn't adequately or easily adjust to a desirable fit. (I also have an old MH shell with the neck synchers and found them to be tedious to use without being terribly effective - just as was the case with this coat). Overall: I've owned several Mountain Hardwear coats over the years and have come to trust their quality and durability but I was not convinced that this jacket met the mark. I considered this coat based on the Outdoor Labs review (their top pick) since their review process was methodical and rigorous (unlike mine) but I can categorically say that the Arc'teryx Cerium LT Hooded Down Jacket is compatively superior in every way. (FWIW, the Cerium is also superior to the Patagonia down hoody sweater that I recently sold. I'd rank the Patagonia ahead of the GW2, also).

Poor construction for price

I’ve used this for maybe 6 ski tours and 30 days in the resort, and the jacket already has 3 holes in it from normal use. Not rips or tears, but small holes caused by inferior construction. For a $250 jacket, this is extremely disappointing, especially from a brand as well regarded as MH.

Don't know what's happened to Mountain Hardwear lately, but the construction quality and consistency seems to be off from their gloves to their jackets like the GW2 down jacket. I ordered a Large and overall it fit perfectly except the arm pits: they were sewn really high. I tried to move around and shift, but that arm pit seam just pressed upward. I'd have to permanently shrug in order for it to relax. I've noticed construction/sewing issues on several Mountain Hardwear items I've purchased lately and it is really disappointing. I seriously don't know how anyone can say the GW2 down jacket fits large, because, ignoring the overly tight arm pits, the rest of the Large jacket felt just about right for my 43in chest. I'd say it runs true to size, if you ignore the arm pit seam. Don't know if it was just the jacket I got or if the cut is the same.

Perfect jacket, runs a little large

This is my third Ghost Whispered. I've been wearing them into the ground for a decade. Super lightweight and easy to compress and store, surprisingly warm for such a lightweight jacket. Only complaint is that they run a little large. I'm 5-11 and a SMALL fits like a medium in other brands. But....I don't love a baggy fit. I prefer something a little more tailored. But that's just aesthetics. Function over form. And this jacket has the edge on function compared to its competitors.

NEVER BUY THIS JACKET!

I had bought one and I used that few times and it already has a hole in the back. My last jacket from another brand I used for more than 5 years and I have done a lot of mountaineering expeditions with that. However, this jacket I used only in the city, for less than 10 times and it could not afford a smooth atmosphere like that. If you are searching for a trustworthy jacket to be a company in the mountains I strongly recommend you try a different brand. I am very disappointed with this product.

Incredible Lightweight Down Jacket

I got this jacket back in November 2019 and took a few months to test it out before reviewing. Living in MN, we get cold winters and this jacket stood the test for the majority of the time. I would say, anything above 10*F it kept me warm with a long sleeve underneath, though I am a naturally warmer person. Hiking in it has been a breeze; kept me happy and comfortable pretty much at all times. The sizing was spot on for me- I am 5'10", 165lbs, average build, and usually wear a M. Ordered a M, fits great. Only things that have bothered me a bit with this jacket is that: 1. The down fill has worn down on the bottom of my forearms from resting my arms on a table often; I've tried to move the fill around but still have had less in those areas. 2. Since I bought a M, it's difficult to add any bulkier clothing underneath the jacket. If you're looking for a new down jacket and are willing to splurge a little, this jacket lives up to it's reputation!
