Why We Like The Cirque Softshell Pant

The Outdoor Research Cirque Softshell Pants are our go-to pants for all things alpine. Their tough, stretchy, and water-resistant fabric was made for our most rugged missions, whether they're in the shoulder season or the dead of winter. Abrasion-resistant performance and a movement-mirroring stretch keep them prepared for mountainous terrain, while articulated knees and a gusseted crotch increase your natural comfort and range of motion. You'll also be ready for backcountry ski tours thanks to the dedicated avalanche beacon pocket and durable scuff guards that resist damage from ski edges, boot rub, and poles.

Runs large

These pants are the perfect multisport 4 season pant. However they do run large. I am 6'1", 165-170 lbs. with an athletic/slim build. Medium/32" pants usually fit. I went with the medium per the size chart but after wearing them a few times and breaking in the fabric after some snowboarding and ice climbing, I found I was maxing out the adjustable waist. Even with a belt they just weren't feeling comfortable so I then ordered a size small which feel like over time will fit perfectly after several uses. Other than sizing, this is my favorite pant and highly recommend them.

Just received my pants and based on other reviews was worried that they wouldn’t fit. I ordered a size small - I am about 5’8 and 138 lbs with an inseam of about 30 or 31. While I agree that there is fair amount of rise - think dad jeans - the rest of the fit seems spot on and I will have some room for a base layer underneath if needed. The adjustable waist is great and the inseam length is probably 32” which will work fine. As a cyclist it’s possible my legs are on the bigger side so I don’t feel the legs are too baggy as in a snowboard pant fit - they seem about right. Anyway - haven’t worn them outside yet - will do that this weekend - just wanted to try and help others with sizing.

Perfect Winter Pant

Awesome pant and I wanted to address the sizing issue because this worried me reading reviews before trying these on, so hope this can clarify things for others based on my experience. I am 6'4", 185-190lb, 32-33 waist, slim/athletic build. I usually order tall sizes in pants if available, like a 34" inseam. These fit perfectly fine over shoes for me, or over tall winter hiking boots or ski boots. I don't feel they are too short at all or too long. I also do not feel they are too tight in the thigh or waist for my build and actually fit really well because of the stretchy fabric. Pockets in all the right spots, the wide leg opening option, shoelace loop and the deep brown saddle color are all spot. These are my go to winter pant for snowshoeing, hiking, and skiing.

Great pair of pants

I got these for winter fat biking in Minnesota. It's gotten down only into the mid 20s thusfar, but the pants are very comfortable at that temp without any long underwear, so I'm confident they will easily go to the -20s. Other reviews complain about freakish length, but that's not my experience. Just got back from walking the dogs and there was no rubbing at the cuffs or anything. They are long enough for cycling, but not too long for being afoot. The black color is also, well, black. The only thing I would change is the cordlock and shockcord at the cuffs. The shockcord is not robust enough, and the cordlock the same.

Longest fit I have ever seen. Too long/big at the bottom even with boots. Going with a different brand as there is no shorter inseam option. Older Cirque model was apparently a normal sizing.

Best all around active winter pants

I usually wear size large, 33-34 waist and 6’0 190. The mediums were a better fit then the large, though made for a slimmer more athletic feel. Articulation in the knees are great, and when leg bottoms unzipped, fit over my snowboarding boots. Rarely have to wear thermals under, except when temps are in the teens or cooler. Great backcountry winter hiking pants, or use on the slopes, very versatile!

So many uses! Theese pants have been everywhere and never cease to amaze me. -Climbing Baker -ski touring in 70 degree sun -ski touring in 20 degree wind -fall/ winter rock climbing -ice climbing -chilly backpacking -wearing around your house because you're in college and keep the thermostat at 60 Definetly don't hold up ski touring in PNW rain, but no soft shell pant should be expected to. Defiantly got a longer inseam, but personally fit me perfect

baggier than original cirque

These are a good pant, but they have definitely been super-sized from the original. At 6'3" 180#, 34/34 the original cirque fit real well in a Large (a bit short but ok in boots). The cirque II in a large is way baggier in the legs and seat (if you're using crampon expect snagging). The waist is adjustable from 34-40 (they say it is nominally 36). In the new size scheme a medium would probably suit me better at the waist, but the length gets to small.

Not as good as it used to be

I am tall, and the original version of this pant, in a size large, fit great. Not too baggy and adequate inseam. New version, same size, is much baggier and perhaps longer. Materials/quality seem to be inferior to its predecessor as well. A bit of a bummer as the original version was such an awesome pant.
