Why We Like The GravityWorks 4.0L Filter System

The GravityWorks 4.0L Filter System is pretty dang easy to operate, and there are plenty of devotees who can't get enough of the world's simplest water filtration system. Just fill one of the Platy Zip bags with water, place it above the empty bag, open the hose clamp, and let gravity do the rest. In 2.5 minutes, you'll have four liters of clean water, and if camp is far away, fill the other bag to carry back with you. Open the hose clamp to dispense water, and shut it to stop the flow. To clean, simply reverse the bags for four seconds, running water through the filter in reverse. That's seriously it.

This worked great on a four-day backpacking trip with friends! It filtered a lot of water relatively quickly and without us having to work for it, which was perfect. The only downside was that silty water clogged it up, so we had to rinse it out and then make sure to pull from clear water as much as possible. But once we figured that out it worked like a charm for our small group.

Very disappointed. I used it on only 3 trips (4 day long backcountry). Worked great on first trip. Then flow rate slowed to almost nothing. I back-flushed, front-flushed, tapped out air bubbles....all the tips and tricks listed and posted about this filter. Recently I tried getting it working correctly at home before a trip. Flows well for a minute then slows to super slow rate. Also, now the dirty bag is starting to leak at the seams. I am really not a a complainer, and have no problem doing "hacks" to get gear working again. But for this price it should be much more dependable. Perhaps I got a faulty one? Who knows. I don't trust it in the back country. Last 2 trips and my upcoming week long trip I will go back to the Katadyn pump or Sawyer. Love you Backcountry.com , but don't love this filter.

Just bought this and am digging it. I have 3 pump filters and a very expensive pump purifier I’ve used through South America. I bought this for my solo trips here in NA for its pretty much set it and forget it feature, ease of use, and large volume capabilities. Did a home test. Of course keep in mind this was using tap water. 4 liters of water. Following the directions did a little backwash to get the bubbles out. I hung the bag first at about 4 ft and then at my height of 5’9” without stopping the flow. It took 2 minutes 55 seconds to filter 4 liters of clear tap water. AWESOME compared to having to sit and pump it myself. Now while I’m setting up camp water can be filtering without my help!!! Few points of concern. 1) Yes the ziploc at the top of the dirty water bag is a pain. The platy website says to use Vaseline so I’ll try this. 2) Not sure if it’s due to first use but the filtered water coming out of the clean water bag did not taste good at all! Anyone else have this experience? It’s not my tap water cause I drink it normally and it doesn’t taste like it does coming out of the bag. 3) both the dirty water bag and clean water bag do not feel what I would consider “bomb proof” for the backcountry. Not sure of the longevity of the bags. Regardless I would still recommend!! For trips I’m definitely going to get the carbon element.

Make sure you backflush it before each trip. It’ll filter 4L in under 5 minutes easy. Very easy to use and packs up nicely.

Good water filter

Recently used this on a bikepacking trip on the great divide. Most of the time it would take 10-15 minutes to filter 4 liters. Have to make sure you purge the air from the filter first and then back flush it when done. Zip lock on the dirty bag is not reliably secure enough to transport while full without leaking.
