Not waterproof + trips

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Thought this boot would be a safe purchase for the hot, wet climate that I live in. Was unfortunately mistaken. Just walking through wet grass my first time wearing the boot outside I could feel moisture seeping through the side- I immediately stopped and took off the boot to check, and lo and behold, there was a wet patch on the inside of the right boot. This was not sweat from my feet; I was maybe two minutes into the walk and I do not sweat so easily. I tried running them under the hose for a few seconds to really test the waterproofing and the left boot didn't have a problem so it is possible there was a mistake when manufacturing, but I don't know. The lugs on the bottom of the boot are also not as bulletproof as the item description would have you believe. I didn't use them enough to experience wear on the sole, but they do slip on smoother surfaces when wet. The boots I received aren't good for muddy or soggy trail conditions in my opinion. The other problem, which for me is arguably much worse, is the little plastic donut things on the inside of the boots that secure the laces. I'll be frank; I don't see the benefit to these or the wire that holds them onto the boot and goes across the heel. In fact I think they would be potentially very dangerous if you were wearing these boots on a narrow, steep trail- while test wearing these boots they tripped me not once but three times, due to the hooks for the laces catching on the wire running through these donut things. I have a closer step than typical and my heels sometimes brush, but this shouldn't be something that happens no matter how close your feet are together. Luckily that happened in my kitchen and not halfway up a craggy slope somewhere! I do have a positive thing to say. They are very comfortable. More comfortable than my old boots. If my problems with them could be set aside, I would have felt just fine jumping right into hiking without a break-in period due to the comfort level of these boots. So if you are perhaps very bow-legged and don't plan on buying these for the waterproofing, more power to you.

A Really Swell Boot

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Growing up in the '40s the only shoes I had were hand-me-downs. Summer was barefoot time and the bottom of my feet were as tough as a Vibram sole. In the mid-50s I joined the Marine Corps. I was sure the government would issue us only the "best" footwear and, except for constantly spit-shining the boots, I was content enough. Later I was a lawman and sometimes-cowboy and bought value-priced boots. Once I splurged on an expensive pair of handmade cowboy boots which were quite comfortable... as long as I was horseback. Well, now that I'm in my eighties with old, tender feet I thought I'd treat myself to something better. Shopping at Backcountry I came across the Salewa Alp Trainer 2 Mid GTX and read the very favorable comments of 21 other folks! I bought 'em and I'm so happy I did! Imagine me strutting around town and trail in the most comfortable boots I ever imagined. And, I don't even know how to pronounce the boot's name! First, the materials are of excellent quality. The craftsmanship is superb! The fit and comfort are a dream. I have 11.5, somewhat narrow feet with a higher arch. From the moment I put them on and pulled the high-quality strings tight I knew my feet had come home. There's been no break-in issue. They just fit! I infrequently do highly difficult hikes any longer but medium and easy level treks are a joy with these Salewa's! My first hike with these boots was 15 miles over moderate hills and climbs with absolutely no issues. I know feet are different and folks have a variety of individual needs but I think these boots are a wise and sound choice for the niche they fill. I appreciate too the great service from Backcountry. These are really a swell pair of boots and I highly recommend them. John

So far So good

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I got these on sale a week before Black Friday and have been wearing them as my primary shoe ever since. I bought these to kick around in during the winter as opposed to my trail runners, but something happened when I started wearing this boot. I stopped having hamstring issues almost 2 days I started wearing these. My knees are not sore any more. My feet stopped hurting at the end of the day after a long walk. I hadn't planned on this. I liked my trail runners and I think they are easy to hike in especially for climbing hills, but I think my feet like these boots so much better. I wear size 11.5 normally and have wider feet so I sized up to a 12 and these fit well for me. These boots wrap around the ankle and lock it in place. It is very comfortable to wear all day. Two nitpick things the laces could be a little longer and the laces are very thin.

Bomb Proof-lightweight boot

This boot has been awesome this spring/summer! I found that the fit compared to the MTN Trainer Lite Mid was a bit wide. However, the extra insole that comes in the box made the fit custom and filled in the volume perfectly. I would recommend doing the recommended break-in period (3 weeks/20 miles) as the heel is a bit stiff. But, once broke in they fit like a glove.

Do-It-All Boots

Familiarity:

These are excellent boots. Super sturdy and supportive without being suffocating, or feeling bulky/clunky. The GTX upper gives nice peace of mind for early season stream crossing or when running into unexpected snow up high. They were pretty great straight out of the box and I didn't notice a really rough break-in period. As other reviews have noted they run true to size. I am a big advocate for anything with a Vibram sole because it usually means a good, comfortable footbed and additionally great gripping soles; these boots are no exception. While these boots are great for a quick after-work hike, they really find their stride on trails that have a scramble or sections of shale field, etc. I can't say enough good things, this was my first experience with Salewa boots and I was extremely impressed.

Straight out of the box.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review Is my personal opinion. Ive tried several boots over the years and always find myself going back to my jungle boots from the marines. The Ups man delivered my boots as I was going to spend the day working in the yard. So why not try them out. They are true to size and fit like a glove, they came with an extra insole if you need a little tighter fit. No breaking in period needed. I was very impressed on the level of comfort right away. I wore them all day and they felt great. So good I figured I would wear them at work the next day. I'm a nurse and I'm on my feet for 12 hours. after my shift I was almost convinced to retire my jungle boots. Next test was hiking. I did two 12 mile hikes and was convinced I had found my new boots. The Salewa Alp Trainer 2 Mid is a great all around boot. The Lacing on the boot gives you the ability to really dial in your comfort and provides great stability. I liked the fact you still feel free to move around, you have a good range of motion and flexibility. The soles provided great grip with out looking like a super swamper on your feet. Overall the quality is great, I received the walnut and fluorescent orange Salewa Alp Trainer 2 Mid. The walnut maybe a little lighter than shown but not enough to notice. Im headed to the Tetons in June and will be leave my jungle boots at home for the first time. I would definitely recommend the Salewa Alp Trainer 2 Mid to anybody looking for a great all around boot.
