Why We Like The Mountain Trainer Lite GTX Hiking Shoe
The Salewa Mountain Trainer GTX Hiking Shoe lives to guide us over ridgeline scrambles and technical ascents on exposed faces. Taking all the burly ingredients of Salewa's mountaineering boots and implementing them in a low-top hiking shoe, the Mountain Trainer delivers all the rigidity and support we'd expect from a Salewa alpine boot, but in a more nimble design.

Worse customer service ever!!!!!!!!!
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've owned these exact Salewa GORETEX hiking shoes for a little over 4 months now. Have taken them on a dozen day hikes and a couple of 1-2 night backpacking trips. The shoes aren't even close to having 50-60 miles on them. The outer edge of the toe area (above/ back from where your smallest toe is) split on both shoes in the same location just from hiking. After this split any kind of water completely leaks in from that area and the inside of the shoe becomes completely soaked. Now I know mass manufacturing pumps out an oops every once in a while and even though from my untrained shoe makers eye this looks like a design flaw rather than a manufacturing oops I was optimistic for having these warrantied and trying out another pair. First off beware if you have ANY issues with Salewa shoes Backcountry.com will tell you you're on your own and to contact Salewa directly. After sending in multiple requests through Salewa's USA website online ticket system with no luck I started calling them. Well it only took 12 or so calls spread throughout weeks to get someone on the phone. They're completely unprofessional and show very little interest in taking care of your Salewa problem let alone customer retention. I had to go back and forth with a rep who claimed the warranty process was stalled due to my lack of providing information. Well on the many tickets i opened on their website everyone included 1- proof or purchase 2- Pictures of the damage along with a well written complaint. She sent me an email while i was on the phone requesting the same info again to which i replied within 15 min of receiving it with ALL requested info yet again. It's now been a week since then and I've emailed and called multiple times and again NO REPLY from Salewa and ZERO support for their product. In short If you ever have any issues with a Salewa purchase rest assured you'll be on your own and best of luck! This is the last pair of Salewa shoes I'll ever buy!

The most unstable pair of hiking shoes!

The most unstable pair of hiking shoes I have ever worn, plus blisters! There's something weird about these shoes, I find I'm unstable even walking down the street nevermind in the woods. I'd be better off hiking in a pair bostonian dress shoes than these. The grip itself is fine, is the way the shoe twists my feet that makes them so poor. It throws everything about my sense of balance off. The fit internally is weird as well. Other hiking shoes I have purchased relatively conformed to the shape my foot. These seem to push at my foot in weird ways.

Stinky shoes.

From the first couple times I wore these, I noticed they stunk badly after use. I don’t have this problem in general. So I wore them infrequently and kept noticing the same problem. After a few months, I though, “I never want to wear these shoes because they stink, maybe I can send them back.” Yup! Sure enough, thanks to Backcountry’s great customer service and reasonable policies, even though I had obviously worn them, and the purchase was outside of the return period, they allowed me to send them back for store credit. Which is more than you would get from most companies and from what the other review states, more than you can expect from Salewa themselves. Poor quality materials leading to foul smelling shoes. Steer clear.

One of the eyelets feel off on first use. After a close look it seemed that it was never attached to the inner grommet. Unfortunately this was after my chance to return them. I contacted Salewa to see if it would be possible to send a replacement eyelet and was told I would have to pay to ship it in to see if they would repair or or not. I’ve never had even cheap shoes break on the very first use before.

Great hiking shoes

I have worn Salewa shoes and boots for many years. This is my 4th pair. They are extremely comfortable and wear like iron. My 1st pair lasted for many years. This pair did not disappoint. I will always go back to Salewa for my hiking needs.

Details of the shoe state they have a Vibram outsole, while the Tech Specs state it's Pomoca sole. Can you advise which is correct?
