The Mountain Trainer Lite GTX Hiking Boot is my go-to daily wear for light hiking and outdoor activity. A great boot with a true-to-size fit and top notch construction.

I don't know if it's just the pair I got, but these boots are not the least bit waterproof despite being "gtx", and never were even right out of the box. The lining won't even hold up while walking through wet grass for 5 or 10 minutes, and Ive probably sprayed nearly an entire can of waterproofing on them and they still soak through quite easily. Apart from that frustrating detail, they are quite comfortable, grippy, and very lightweight.

Have used them for two seasons now, and just got back from 5 days in Acadia. Pretty much the perfect boot for casual hiking: light, lots of support, and the toe really takes a beating. Incredibly comfortable out of the box, there was a bit of a break-in period for some rubbing on the shin/upper ankle. The half star came off for two reasons. It's not quite as durable as I would have liked. The stitching on the top/outside of the boots started to come undone early into my second season with them. It hasn't really been an issue except that it obv affects the waterproof abilities of the shoe, which aren't fantastic to begin with. Definitely find my feet getting damp/wet when walking through wet grass or landing in a stream for a hot second when misjudging the stability of a rock. I would be willing to spend 25-30% more on this shoe if the durability could be increased and the waterproofing beefed up. Perhaps that boot would not longer qualify as a light hiker. Either way, I'm likely to purchase another pair, though I will perhaps see if there aren't more durable options out there.

More Support than you would expect

I used this boot a bunch last summer as I prepped for a fall hunting season. I loaded my pack pretty heavy to prepare my body and these boots handled the weight very nicely! They run true to size for me, and the width allows the perfect amount of room for thicker socks or swelling of feet. I would recommend a break in period as the heel is a bit stiff. However, once broke in they are fantastic!

Took these on an 8 mile hike, 3500’ elevation gain. I had worn them yesterday walking the dogs just to give them a stretch. Up to this point I’ve had Zamberlan, Asolo and Boreal leather boots. All were heavy and solid. However I needed something a bit lighter. These fit the bill. Going uphill the boots were comfortable and light weight, almost sneaker like. The soles are sticky and have excellent traction across dirt, rock and even snow. On the way way down I had cinched the boots tight and felt great until nearly the end when I noticed some rubbing against my left little toe - some adjustment on the laces might help with that. I have slightly wide feet. The heels were snug in the boot and never felt any rubbing. If you are looking for a more solid heavy duty boot, look elsewhere. These do have more flex to them, keep that on mind. One issue that came up today was that these boots are not as burly as my Zamberlans and so the Kahtoola micro spikes were a little loose. But that certainly would not be a deal breaker for me.

I've only hiked about 100 miles in these and none of them in wet or rocky bushwhack conditions. I think they'd be fine. The fit and the comfort are fantastic. 5 stars worth. Maybe 6.

Best Boot I Have Hiked In
- Familiarity:

Have had these boots all summer, and have loved every mile I have hiked in them. The boot is very forgiving when it comes to lacing up, giving you the ability to loosen and tighten up where you might need depending on your feet that day, letting you expand to accommodate swelling on long hikes. Longest single day hike I have done with this was right at 16 miles, up 2 mountainsides, not a single issue with my feet the next day, no blisters, feet have recovered almost entirely! My favorite feature is the support on the heel, giving you that extra leverage for incline hikes. Backpacker magazine recommended these to me and did not miss the mark. Fantastic boots.

Solid & Stable Boot

I've only had the Salewa Mountain Trainer Lite for a few weeks. Compared to most mid-level priced boots, the Mountain Trainer is a forerunner. The boots have more ankle and lateral support than most MID height Salomon boots. The Salewa Mountain Trainer definitely are lighter and breathable then many other Gore-Tex boots I have tried. Sizing was almost spot on for my foot at 9.5 mens, my foot did slide a tid bit, but with a thicker insert that solved the problem and gave me more cushion, which I was looking for in a Summer style non-leather boot, but still Gore-Tex. These will be widely used on the AT this summer and fall, along with many short day hikes. The Mountain Trainer seemed to be well built with quality materials, as Salewa has seemed to hold to the test. I like the added toe protection for rocks scuffs, etc... My only complaint so far is the laces. I would like to see Salewa beef up the thickness of the laces, at least 1mm or 2mm to add some girth to the size of the laces. This would help the boot feel more true and snug, along with stabilizing the foot. More colors please.....

So Far, So Good......

Have done a few hikes in the Smokey's with them, coming from several pairs of La Sportiva Trango GTX's which I've put through the wringer on many multi-day treks over the years. These are a bit lighter and have more room in the toe box. My feet were not as tired at the end of the day. First day I wore them the heavens opened up mid way through, my feet got wet. I was wearing shorts so I think it was from water running down my legs. Rained the second day I wore them, had rain pants on. My feet stayed dry so I do think they are truly waterproof but need some more time in them. Hence the 4 stars. The insole is a joke - as are most. Very comfortable with a pair of Superfeet inserts.
