Durability issues after one hike!

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Good for one hike in the White Mtns of NH. At the summit I removed my boots to air my tootsies and gave my new boots a once over. I was horrified to see that the GoreTex liner was tearing away from the boot collar. I can only add one photo to the review but I also found (as others have mentioned) that the lugs were missing chunks of rubber. Gorgeous boot but not to the standards I came to know Salewa for. A worthy replacement for my Salewa Firetail EVOs continues..

Really disappointed - Poor Durability

Really bummed about these boots - mainly over the durability of their soles. I bought these on June 23 (almost exactly a month ago) and have taken them on one 4-day trip and one 5-day trip both with mixed dirt trail, snow, rock in the Cascades. Upon finishing our last trip I looked at the soles and they look super beat up for less than 10 days of use. Really disappointing for a $300 pair of boots that I would expect to last multiple seasons. I'm not sure if this is an issue with Salewa or more with the Vibram soles but I cannot recommend boots that fall apart so quickly. I'm typically pretty careful with my gear and have never had durability complaints with anything else; so if you're looking for boots to use on rock/scrambling/mixed climbing, I would look elsewhere. Attached some photos so you can see the condition of the lugs after 9 days of use...

Well built boot

Purchased for elk hunt in CO. Logged approx 35 miles on the boots, about half with heavy pack. I tried many brands before purchasing. Generally always been a Meindl fan but local store quit selling them. I'm a standard 10.5 normal ly, needed 11 in this boot. Perfect from length standpoint. The boots are a little narrow as the toe box starts to curve in too soon.... therefore my pinky toe area seemed to crunch and honestly hurt pretty good. My feet are not wide and I don't wear wide in any shoe. If ordered again, I'd definitely get a wide. I did loosens all laces through the toe box area to accommodate the narrow shape but still too narrow. Otherwise, nice boot. Hard sole and little flex (which I wanted) so a new insole is a must. The insole that comes in the boot is a gimmick with no purpose (sorry, but honest). It has zero cushion, zero support and the two piece Velcro gimmicky thing....really? They do need a little time to wear in. Not a 'broke in out of the box' boot. Not bad, but I could tell a big difference in comfort after my initial 4 mile hike in (with heavy pack). Anyway, solid packing boot. Just order 1/2 size up and a wide version....also a set of insoles. Had I know before my trip, I'd have returned for a wide size.

Most comfortable mountain boots!

The Rapace is probably the most comfortable 3 season mountaineering boot I have ever worn. Fits like a hiking boot, but performs like a mountaineering boot. Also works well for hiking in really rugged terrain where you need added protection. Fit is wider than most Italian mountain boots. Will probably fit most people.

Mountain Beast, Put Through the Wringer

Familiarity:

I've summited over 30 13,000ft+ peaks in the Rockies and hiked hundreds of miles of trails throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana in these beasts. It's the best of all worlds for adventuring the mountains. It's a lightweight mountaineering boot (no insulation) that you can stay dry in, throw a toe into snow/ice with a it's stiff rugged sole, and yet nimble enough to jam a toe in a crack or hang on a knife edge for more serious scrambling. I'm finally retiring mine after 5 years and buying the exact same Salewa Rapace GTX. For a do it all boot in the Rockies that can handle everything, you can't go wrong with this boot.

Arborist approved!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I wear between 10.5 and 11. I bought 11 and it gives me just enough space to wear thicker wool socks (a little tight). However they are perfect for summer wool blends. -- I bought these for tree work after reading several Arborists favor another style of this brand. That brand didn't have my size, so I went with these. -- I wore these to work for three days after I opened the box, the first two days were with darn tough hiking wool blends, with polyester sock liners underneath (the best way to break in boots). I did a lot of driving and maybe had them laced slightly too tight, had some cramping in my shin. Aside from that, very little break in time needed. -- The vibram sole is solid, there isn't a lot of give or flexibility at this point, but not so much to say they're stiff, or lower the rating. -- I've worn them for probably about 60 hours at this point. 3 of which were spent in a tree, on spurs (Edelrid Talon's). They felt great!! The heel is not huge, but there is a slight indent in the arch area, which helps nuzzle the gaff. The stiffness of the vibram acts as a shank and there was zero discomfort. -- I would highly recommend these for Spur climbing, though might be A Little Stiff for spurless, however they could just need a little more braking in. --- Two biggest cons: The laces look and feel nice, but without a square not, they untie within an hour or two. -- The (3) hooks that hold the laces rub against the inside of the gaffs while walking (didn't notice while aerial) I'd bet money they will break off, which I've heard about the other style boot too. If this happens I'll just drill holes to replace them. -- All in all, a quality boot, rugged, comfy, and they look sharp as hell.
