Why We Like The Phantom Tech Mountaineering Boot
Scarpa's Men's Phantom Tech Mountaineering Boot is a solid choice for everything from standard mountaineering to hardcore ice climbing. It has a waterproof, breathable HDry membrane that's laminated to a combination of PU Tek and S-Tech fabrics, making it about as burly and waterproof as any cold weather mountaineering boot on the market. A new addition to the Phantom Tech is Scarpa's flex seal gaiter with a spiraling zipper closure that helps eliminate stress points as the boot flexes forward, making the Phantom more comfortable when hiking and climbing. Beneath the burly waterproof gaiter lies a Primaloft insulated boot with carbon fiber insole and EVA cushioning for support on terrain steep and moderate. A microporous EVA midsole adds gently cushioning to the boot without interfering with its overall feel, while a lightweight Vibram Precision Tech Roll provides a durable yet light sole to the boot. The Phantom Tech is also compatible with automatic and semi-automatic crampons, so you can enjoy extra grip whether you're traveling across glaciers or front-pointing up ice.

Solid boot choice into sub zero. Took them out in -5 today and they felt comfortable. Easy to move on mono points, the slim profile makes the boot feel more like a rock shoe.

Very Light, Questionable Laces
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I had to size down 1/2 from my Phantom Guides, but these seem like great boots so far. The beefy sole is back and they are crazy light (apx. 180g lighter per boot than my Guides). My concern is with the laces. Mine came with regular laces, not the cord and camlock of previous boots, and while that system had its drawbacks, these don't seem tough enough to last, and aren't as good at securing my foot. Plus, if they do break, they'll be a real bear to replace. Time will tell I guess.
