Why We Like The ME502 Cycling Shoe
Shimano checks all the boxes for the demanding trail rider with the ME502 Cycling Shoe. The low-profile and single Boa L6 dial keep the overall details on the ME502 to a minimum, which comes in clutch when you need to make fast, no-look adjustments on the slopes. The midsole conforms to the trial chatter with the Torbal design that allows the shoe some freedom to bend around the pedal so that your body doesn't have to do as much work to balance and make minor steering adjustments.
The ME502 skips the expensive carbon layup in favor of Shimano's proprietary rubber compound that features an enhanced grip for emergency kick-stand maneuvers and huffing on foot back to the top. It achieves a stiffness rating of six out of 12 on Shimano's scale for a stable platform when you need to transfer watts, but not so much that you feel inclined to bring back up shoes when you're headed for noms after the ride.

Excellent Daily XC/Trail Shoe!
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Over the years, I've found that most Shimano shoes fit my somewhat narrow, low-volume feet better than any other brand I've tried. I've only got a few miles on these, but I'm very impressed with the design of these shoes for general XC/Trail use. They have a much more precise fit compared to the previous generation M-501 (which fit like a boat) - very close to Shimano's old M-089 and M-163 - with a fairly tight toebox. You duck-footed guys should probably look elsewhere. I wear a 48 in all Shimano shoes - these fit my size 13 foot perfectly. They have great rigidity while stomping the pedals (I'm 6'5", 215#), but they're very comfortable. The BOA is super easy to use, and offers impressive comfort for how precise the fit is. Hike-a-bike sections are no problem - great traction with no heel slippage. They work seamlessly with Time ATAC cleats & Special 8 pedals - easy in & out. They're quite a bit lighter than my AM901s, almost like a full-on XC shoe, but they've got reinforcements to ward of moderate abuse, and super grippy rubber soles. I think this shoe would work really well for racing or endurance events. These are my new favorite trail shoes - the perfect balance of comfort, weight, and protection for general XC/Trail use. One caveat - I hope the "new" rubber outsole design stays intact better than Shimano's previous trail shoes. I've had a pair of M-089s and M-163s that both peeled the outsole away from the midsole while hike-a-biking in rough terrain. While I loved those shoes, I had to trash them - super disappointed!
