Why We Like The Therm-a-Rest Vesper Quilt

The Therm-a-Rest Vesper Quilt replaces our bulkier, heavier sleeping bags on minimalist-minded, summery backpacking trips. It weighs a little less than a pound, and can pack down to the size of a water bottle. Therm-a-Rest used down insulation with the highest rill rating (900) to ensure the loftiest warmth and the smallest compressibility. This down also boasts a Nikwax hydrophobic treatment to retain its lofty warmth in moisture-riddled environments.

The jury’s still out.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Pulled it out of the box and held it up to a window and every compartment was only half full. Called Thermarest Custy Serv & got a really great guy... cold dryer, tennis balls, vigorous (but not violent) shaking and a lot of pinching and pulling the clusters and voila! Just barely full compartments. Tested on back porch on a night with dropping temps wearing long underwear, a super thick winter hat, and and using an R5 winter pad. It’s toasty warm all through the 40’s but then after that it falls off a cliff... at 4 am & 36*F I was too cold to even think about sleeping and went inside. Tried again another night inside a SOL thermolite bivi, same clothes, same hat, super warm, zero condensation inside, sopping wet dew all round my yard. Thermally great but back to the inconvenience of a sausage casing survival style sleep system. PROS: 1) Best fitting foot box ever. 2) perimeter baffle is fantastic-seals super well 3) neck collar/drawstring best of any quilt and on par with my custom hand made winter bag. 4) The shell fabric just awesome in every way. CONS: 1) The pad straps fall off way too easily & are not very useful side sleeping with knees bent. 2) when you add the weight of winter hat winter pad, & bivi sack there is ZERO weight savings for me but even with the extras it is super compact somthing I really like a lot. MY BOTTOM LINE FOR NOW: buy the 20*F version there just isn’t enough down in the 32*F model to make sense or work like it should; It’s a fantastic shell design that’s undermined by being underfilled.

Vesper Quilt

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Loved it. Best nights of sleep I've ever had in the Sierra's. Spent four nights in the Kings Canyon area in late June. We had relatively warm nights, except for the night we spent at about 10,500'. Even that night I just layered clothing and slept like a baby. I turn a lot and side sleep and loved how the quilt stayed on me, but allowed me to spread out, move around, roll over etc. Coldest night was maybe 30-35. Warm nights in the 50's and I slept in a t-shirt. The bag packs super light, and very small. Just a little bigger than a standard Nalgene bottle.
