Huge Potential, Missed!!!

I heavily debated between Garmin Edge 530 and this.... I went with this as it had some big pros over Garmin: #1 - USB-C... For crying out loud it is shameful to see Garmin hanging on to Micro USB in 2022! The fact Wahoo cared to include this now best standard port was huge.. #2 - Heart Rate Zone in color... I pay attention to zone when riding and nothing on the market compared to how Wahoo displayed this. #3 - LED Lights on top... Extra info indicated with these lights... Seen on any data page. #3 - Zoom in/out data fields... This is a cool way to focus on what is most important... Nothing else on the market compares. SO.... On my first and only ride with this thing (20mi): I was loving all of the above... Big time... I was thinking to myself I made the right choice... Then I noticed how SLOW this thing performs in almost every respect.... When I finished Route and went "Back to start" it was painfully slow..... Directed me down all the roads I did not want to go on and when it would recalculate back to the bike trail I was obviously trying to stick to, things got VERY slow.... I would have to patiently wait seemingly 30+ seconds after pushing the page flip button before the page would change.... When I got back to the map page it was blank for seeming eternity..... The device crashed and rebooted once on the ride, fortunately it kept the route... Painfully slow to try to pan the map..... When I pushed the buttons more than once sense there was such a long delay It asked if I wanted to end the ride and I freaked out that it was going to end my ride...... Turn ques are way off.... Like "turn in 70 ft" and its 10ft away... Then it still says you need to turn after you turned.... Finished the ride and I patiently held this thing and my phone in my hand to see if Strava would automatically upload... It did,...... Eventually..... Maybe a couple minutes or more.... Have not used Garmin Edge device yet but have tracked activities including rides with Garmin watches and Strava uploads are in the blink of an eye.. Again, Wahoo could have had an incredible product!!! If it just functioned right and reasonably quickly... This would have been the best thing ever. I am glad I am still within return period.

This is the first "smart" computer I've ever used, but I researched them thoroughly before purchasing. I did consider a Garmin and also the Hammerhead Karoo 2, but I definitely feel I made the right decision with the Wahoo based on my needs. I wanted something simple, reliable, and no-nonsense more like a standard bike computer, but also something that shows more data, integrates with my Varia radar, and can navigate if needed. It may not be as flashy as the others, but it just works. What I like: - Zero issues on mine / 100% reliable so far. Haven't had the issues others reported. Maybe they got defective devices? - Very simple and very well designed. But still lots of features. Simple screen and menus. Set it and forget it. - Battery life has been great (was big concern). Note I don't use navigation much. - Connects to all my bluetooth/ant+ devices: Polar HR monitor, DuoTrap speed+cadence, Varia radar - Screen easily visible in bright sun and doesn't need backlight during day saving battery. Auto brightness works well for night. Screen makes good use of color (different colors for heart rate ranges, etc). - Shows all my sensors, elevation, %grade, etc info on one page. - Love the "pages" format. You can cycle between 3 pages: Main page, climbing page, & navigation. Each is customizable based on what fields you want to see. Main page can show lots of data fields. Climbing can show profile, etc including upcoming profile when actively navigating. - Haven't used navigation or the map very much, but it has worked fine and is designed well. Can use phone to initiate routes or element itself. Map is easy to read despite being small. - Lights at top and sounds are useful at getting your attention (radar alert, turns, etc). - Integrates well with Varia radar (main reason I got smart device). Shows cars on left side of screen. - Wahoo app is very good, and pairs well with phone. Easy to customize displays through phone app. - Auto upload to Strava is very convenient. Have never tried live segments. - No issues with mount. Very easy to take on and off but very secure. Other: - A little trouble with buttons using full finger gloves (probably an issue with other brands, too) - Colors not as vibrant as marketing images, but it's implemented well to highlight something - Wouldn't complain if screen was larger, but current size is not an issue. - Wish it could integrate with Di2 hood buttons, but I think only Garmin can.

Sudden reset during first race.

I loved the size, graphics and basic functionality of the bolt, until 90 miles into my first race with it, it went into a factory reset mode. Deleting all race data and the route. It asked me to pair the device again, just like out of the box. Funny enough, it was a gravel grinder with spotty cell service, so setting up became a problem. And continuing without the route was not an option. Don't think I need to further describe my feelings towards the device. The customer service said its not a known problem but I should contact them if it happens again hahaha. Everyone who races knows how big of a deal it is having to stop mid race because of a stupid problem like this. Not going to give it another chance to live through that. Well that's very disappointing. No wonder why some racers have a spare Wahoo with them. As much as I don't want to, I'll be going back to Garmin. Which did freeze in the past, but never lost all the data that catastrophically. Also, some features I'm missing on it, is weather reports and custom time alerts. On the plus side, I liked the navigation, the screen graphics, buttons on top and the LEDs. But it seems that using it with the LED feature lowers the battery life significantly. I was down to 45% after 5 hours.

Buyer Beware

Upgraded to the v2 Bolt from the v1 when it released at the end of May for two reasons: 1) The color screen and updated LEDs 2) On-device routing and rerouting. First, the new color screen is great. It is super legible, and the map is much easier to follow when navigating at a glance. The clarity and auto brightness features work great and the LEDs at the top are now actually visible in the sunlight. The second reason for buying it has been a major disappointment. On-device routing simply does not work. Every time I load a route on the device, route to point on the map, or route to a saved location from the device itself, the Bolt crashes. Routing from the phone still works but if you get off course, re-routing working is hit or miss. I keep the device up to date and Wahoo is aware of the issue, yet still no solution 3 months after its launch. The other lesser talked about problem for the better part of a year now is the inability to turn off sharing your location with other Wahoo users. Currently you cannot turn off the “share my location with other users” function so your location is always being shared and other random folks names are always blocking your map on the device. It is quite annoying when I try to look at the map quickly and its blocked by strangers names. So if you live in a congested area its infuriating. There is a toggle to turn this feature off on the companion app but it doesn’t work. Wahoo is also aware of this issue and still hasn’t fixed it. I recommend this review before purchasing, so you know what you're getting yourself into https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/05/wahoo-elemnt-bolt-v2-2021-with-color-screen-maps-a-review-in-progress.html. Once the device stops crashing and Wahoo fix the other software issues, it is a 5 star product. But until then, 2 stars it is!
