Why We Like The Zipp 454 NSW Carbon Disc Brake Wheel
For a speed weapon that's tubeless-ready, we can't go wrong with the 454 NSW Carbon Disc Brake Wheel. An undulating 53/58mm-deep rim shape, also known as Zipp's Sawtooth profile, inspires aero efficiency and crosswind stability for wind-slicing goodness, and a 23mm internal rim width is optimized for running tubeless tires up to 38c at reduced air pressure. Its Cognition DB hubset rolls efficiently whether we're pedaling hard or taking a break to coast down that well-deserved descent. These features, combined with the stopping power of disc brakes, make this a smooth-rolling, speedy machine.

Great wheel, great service
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I ordered a set of hard-to-find expensive Zipp wheels. They shipped quickly. Unfortunately, one of the wheels arrived without endcaps. Customer service did not respond to my request for a set of endcaps. I gave up and ordered what I thought were the right endcaps from somewhere else. NBD, out $30. Fast forward about 100 miles. Pawls won't engage consistently on the wheel. I take the freehub body off and find the freewheel packed with grease. WTF? I clean out the grease and apply mineral oil, seems to fix the problem. Nope, still not right. I take the wheel to my LBS. They think the endcaps are not the right ones, exactly, and order another set (this part is probably my fault for ordering the wrong endcaps). I have contacted BC support twice during this process. They seem remarkably uninterested. They tell me it's probably a stripped freehub body and the cassette is rotating freely (it isn't). They tell me it's probably a problem with the axle (it isn't). I sent them a video of the problem. They tell me to send an email to warranty returns. I send an email. They got back to me within a day or so (that was nice). They, too, don't seem particularly interested. I tell them that the wheel arrived without endcaps and with the freehub packed with grease, which Zipp says they would not do. I tell them that I suspect the wheel had been RMA'd by someone else and BC passed it off as NIB. Still seem uninterested and unapologetic. No offer to help. They tell me to have the LBS open a warranty case with SRAM. I am really disappointed in the poor QA on an EXPENSIVE wheel. I am disappointed that the wheel came without endcaps and not in a usable condition. I am disappointed that customer service was so poor. I am disappointed that they seem to be so bored with me and my problem. I would expect exactly this level of service from a cheap $500 Chinese wheel, not an expensive Zipp wheel. Boo. Edit: It took a little while, but, Backcountry reached out and made this whole thing right. They sent me a new wheel and gave me no trouble returning the old one. Now, I have a great wheel and everything is fine.
